Stewardship and Sustainability
Stewards of the Land
Protectors of the Environment
That’s who we are and that’s what we will always be. The Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers have always put sustainability first. We’re keenly aware that our existence is predicated on keeping our soil rich and water quality high. Without that, we can’t produce the quality crops that people across America need.
Many of Wisconsin’s potato growers have a long and rich tradition of family farming. Many of our farms have been in the family for generations, and even today, those traditions are being passed on to the next generation of potato growers. That’s wonderful news because our tradition of sustainability and great agricultural practices stays fervent from one generation to the next. That’s what sustainability really is.
We're Well‑Grounded
Stewards of the Land
At Eat Wisconsin Potatoes, we take our responsibility to the land seriously. Through programs like Wisconsin Healthy Grown®, we ensure that our farming practices promote sustainability and protect the environment. We have worked with experts and organizations like the Defenders of Wildlife and the International Crane Foundation to safeguard biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and support wildlife habitats. These efforts not only improve the quality of our crops but also help protect the ecosystems we depend on, fostering a healthy relationship between farming and nature.
Protecting Ecosystems and Supporting Biodiversity
At Eat Wisconsin Potatoes, we share a commitment to sustainability similar to organizations like Defenders of Wildlife, which focuses on protecting wildlife and restoring natural habitats. Their dedication to conservation aligns with what we strive for through our Wisconsin Healthy Grown® program. By working with ecologists and conservationists, we ensure that our farming practices not only produce high-quality potatoes but also support biodiversity and protect the environment. It’s all part of our ongoing effort to farm responsibly and care for Mother Nature’s resources around us.
Protecting Cranes and Our Ecosystems
The International Crane Foundation focuses on conserving cranes and the ecosystems on which they depend. Their work aligns with our sustainability goals at Eat Wisconsin Potatoes, particularly through our Wisconsin Healthy Grown® program, which promotes eco-friendly farming that supports biodiversity and protects natural habitats. Both of us are dedicated to protecting the environment, whether through sustainable agriculture or the preservation of vital wildlife areas. Together, these efforts contribute to healthier ecosystems for both wildlife and farming communities.
Wisconsin Healthy Grown®: Leading the Way in Sustainable Farming
About two-thirds of land in the U.S. is privately owned, with much of it used for farming, which has a big impact on the environment. In the 1990s, the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA) teamed up with the World Wildlife Fund and the University of Wisconsin-Madison to create the Wisconsin Healthy Grown® program. This program set a new standard for sustainable potato farming. Every year, Wisconsin Healthy Grown® farms are certified for their commitment to eco-friendly practices, working closely with ecologists and conservationists to protect water, restore ecosystems, and support local wildlife.
